A moiré pattern is an interference pattern created when two grids are overlaid at an angle. Christian Schwarzwald utilises this phenomenon to create intricate patterns in charcoal and acrylic on paper. Dissatisfied with the reduction of art to easily saleable, discrete, small-scale objects, Schwarzwald here has extended his pieces to incorporate the material base of the gallery walls themselves. In this way, creating large, site-specific drawing installations, which only last for the duration of the exhibition. Schwarzwald has exhibited at the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg and the Martha Herford museum. “Moiré” is a chance to catch a Berlin show in an intimate setting.
