While Berlin is often listed with the likes of Paris and London as the European capitals of visual art production, our burgeoning city coalesces in another cultural trifecta. Placed along side Amsterdam and Rotterdam, these three northern European cities are internationally renowned as pivotal players in the contemporary dance scene.
In hallmark Berlin fashion, what the dance community lacks in funding it makes up for in ample space and droves of international participants. While a large portion of performances relay on grant subsides and a DIY ethos, the global clout Berlin has garnered in recent decades has heralded in a new wave of talent and an expanding interest in the movement based practice.
Arguably one of the biggest dance festivals in Europe Tanz im August, begins tonight and runs through the 25th. With performance entrance prices ranging from free – 30 Euros, the two week schedule can be found online here: www.tanzimaugust.de/2012/_Timetable.pdf
