Last week, the Berlin Masters Foundation announced its 2020 finalists. The Berlin Masters Foundation was created with the goal of providing opportunities to elevate young artists under the age of 30, who have their residence in Berlin. This non-profit foundation aims to support Berlin’s forthcoming generation of artists and ease their integration into the professional art industry. In particular, the annual ‘Berlin Masters Exhibition’ sources its participating artists through an open call. From the submissions, 10-12 artists are picked to present their work publicly. The following artists have been chosen by Berlin Masters head curator, Philipp Bollmann, and the advisory board based on their promising show of new talent.

On the list of finalists is Evelyn Bencicova, known for her meticulous clinical aesthetic in her photography and art direction, which is used by high luxury fashion labels such as Gucci and other cultural institutions like Berghain, the Royal Opera House and more. Then there’s multidisciplinary artist Billie Clarken who has practiced a range of different mediums, from written word to sculptural pieces made of found objects, mobilized to showcase our collective preference and attraction to spectacle over reality. Lena Marie Emrich also employs different media in her art, from performance pieces to sculptures, in order to reflect on various social practices. Jorinde Fischer creates pastel and other coloured fabric hangings, while the sculpture duo, Alice Hauck & Amelie Plümpe, use wood and construction objects in their sculptural installations. Eric Meier, who recently presented his ‘Goodbye Deutschland’ at Hosek Contemporary, has a particular interest in the historical period after the collapse of the socialist system in East Germany. Julius Weigel primarily works with the medium of film and video. Another duo, the collaborators Manuel Resch & Maximilian Maria Willeit, have come together to create fantasy-like acrylic paintings. And finally, Fabian Warnsing, whose work is dualistic in nature, engages in both black and white photography as well as colourful, shape-emphasised painting.
The exhibition showcasing the work of these finalists is set to take place from Wednesday, August 19th until Saturday, August 29th.
