For the first time at the turn of the year 2023/24, Arthena Foundation invites applications for a grant to support artists in financing a publication. Arguing that the medium of the book has not lost its importance in the digital age, as it continues to play a central role in the documentation, archiving and communication of art, the Foundation aims to support publication projects in the artistic community. In order to ensure a broad foundation for artistic work in the future and to contribute to the preservation of a diverse cultural offering, the idea of “Publish Now!” was born.
The fellowship is aimed at artists who reflect in a special way on the medium of the book with regard to their own work or who would like to publish their work in a first monographic publication. In addition to substantial financial support, it also includes professional mentoring. Experts from the institution will accompany the work process with specialist knowledge and practical tips. With this multilayered funding measure, Arthena Foundation aims to support artists in their professional development.
Applications are open to artists living or born in Germany, regardless of their age. The publication project may be a catalogue for a solo exhibition, an independent monographic publication, or an artist book. The publication should be published by a publishing house in an edition of at least 200 copies (catalogue or monographic publication) or 100 copies (artist book).
The prize is awarded once a year to a total of two artists by a jury of experts appointed by the institution Arthena Foundation. The maximum funding per artist is 50% of the publication costs and up to 10,000 Euros. The remaining project funds must be documented. In case of exhibition publications, proof of the non-profit status of the exhibiting institution must be provided. The provided funding excludes commercial partners.
To apply, artists must send the following documents by e-mail to Christine Tebbe in German or English: Completed application form; concept for the publication project as well as a portfolio with documentation of the artistic method of working; detailed cost and financing plan, including the applicant’s own fee and any third-party funding applied for and/or granted; and CV of the applicant and, if available, details of other experts and service providers involved in the publication (e.g. graphic designers, publishers).
