As a European technology group for building services, STRABAG SE has its origins in Austria and Germany. As well as economic and ecological responsibility, cultural and social engagement are deeply integrated into the life of the company. STRABAG Kunstforum – founded in the 1990s, when the group was still headquartered in the Austrian town of Spittal/Drau – has successfully built bridges between art and business, including via its annual art prize to support young artists. First awarded in 1994, the competition was initially limited to Austria. Since 2009, when it became the STRABAG Artaward International, it has also been open to artists from selected European countries.
The STRABAG Artaward is an award for the support of art for artists of up to 40 years in the fields of painting and drawing, which terms are freely reinterpreted for the contemporary art landscape. Considered artists should be from Austria, Germany and Slovenia. Participants must be citizens of one of these three countries or must have been permanently based in one of these countries for at least two years.
The jury members of STRABAG Artaward International 2024 are art experts from the participating countries: Anna-Catharina Gebbers, Curator Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin; Alenka Gregorič, Artistic director Cukrarna, Ljubljana; Johan Holten, Director Kunsthalle Mannheim; Angela Stief, Director Albertina Modern, Vienna; and Sebastian Haselsteiner, Director STRABAG Kunstforum, Vienna.
A main prize of 16,000 Euros and four recognition prizes of 8,000 Euros each will be awarded. In addition, artworks of the winners might be purchased for STRABAG Artcollection. Following the award ceremony and the collective exhibition of all prize-winning works, each of the five laureates will have a solo exhibition at STRABAG Kunstforum in Vienna and the laureates can also apply for the artist-in-residence program at STRABAG Artstudio in Vienna.
