The ADfD (Alternative Denkmal für Deutschland) aims to trace migration memories as well as create new monuments in digital and urban spaces. The project conducts public meetings at the Spore Initiative in Neukölln to define the development of the memorial, stories and visual ideas that are shared along with the form of the monument. Stories, testimonies and visual memories of migrants and refugees living in Berlin are connected in a series of audio-visual works by the Alternative Monument for Germany, in order to set a positive context for the discourse on migration and counteract current xenophobic movements.
The ADfD proposes an alternative to populist right-wing ideologies of the AfD by approaching migration from the perspective of its ability to weave memories and spaces into a future shared space, a safe environment created by diverse, evolving communities with a focus on queer feminist voices. The Augmented Reality monument creation process will allow for renowned cultural workers to deliver lectures, discussions, workshops, and performances.
The program is open to artists, scholars, activists and citizens. Taking place from April 29th to May 5th, 2024, the program’s participants will be compensated a sum of €300 for their participation in the 6-day workshop and, in addition, a follow-up session for feedback on June 9th and 10th.
In their application, applicants must answer questions such as: What would the monument look like if it didn’t have a physical shape? What would the monument be if it were only one sentence? What would the monument look like if it were an everyday object? Etc.
