The Bärenzwinger Gallery is hosting an open call in search of artists to participate in their winter exhibition. The thematic focus of the winter exhibition will be dedicated to the phenomenon of taboos. The concept of the taboo is deeply rooted in human societies and refers to certain topics or behaviors that are considered forbidden, inappropriate or sacred. The exhibition aims to create a dialogue that revolves around the invisible contours that impact individuals and communities by making existing social taboos transparent.
The Bärenzwinger is a former animal enclosure and not a typical white cube, thus it is crucial to interpret the project in the context of the unique symbolism and spatial characteristics of the site. The Bärenzwinger will provide a small indoor and an outdoor area that also serve as an exhibition space, which requires the works to be waterproof. Winter conditions must also be taken into account for the interior.
The Bärenzwinger seeks professional artists, designers and collectives with a focus on work in Berlin. While a primary residence in Berlin is not mandatory, please note that the Bärenzwinger is unable to provide coverage for travel or accommodation expenses. Artists of all backgrounds and mediums are encouraged to apply.
An honorarium of 800 Euros will be awarded to each of the six artistic positions selected. The work production is also financed with up to 183 Euros per piece. The Bärenzwinger team also supports the projects with transport, an installation team, press work and visitor services.
