Akademie Schloss Solitude, a foundation based in Stuttgart, offers an interdisciplinary and international fellowship program for artists, scholars and scientists. Residencies at Akademie Schloss Solitude provide their fellows with both materials and conditions necessary to engage with their own personal research projects. As a transdisciplinary unit, the Akademie stands as a learning platform outside of the formal educational system. It seeks to encourage change in societal processes and initiate intergenerational discourse.
Since the opening of the foundation in 1990, more than 1,400 artists coming from more than 120 countries have shaped projects at the Akademie, realising various public events that gain further visibility through the online platform Schlosspost. Their alumni make up a close and global network that is gradually expand with each following year. An important part of their program is to allow its participants to work and research free from daily pressures or deadlines.
For the first time in its 30-year history, there is a thematic call. In cooperation with KfW Stiftung, the set focus is “Mutations”. The content-related emphasis seeks to foster transdisciplinary and transcultural dialogue between different disciplines during the 9-month of the program. Its 17th open call invites international artists to apply for their artist-in-residence-program. Practices may include: visual (visual arts and media), aural and physical (music and performing arts), digital (digital art, gaming, digital journalism, digital publishing), spatial (architecture and design), textual (literature and language), societal (education, mediation, theory), and scientific (humanities, social, natural and economic sciences) practices. Candidates should be younger than 40, and not enrolled in degree programmes. Applications of artist groups are possible. The main spoken language will be English. Fellowships usually last between six, nine or twelve months; fellows have to reside at least two thirds of their fellowship at the Akademie. There is a monthly fellowship grant of EUR 1,200, a coverage of travel expenses and a free furnished studio.
