Open Call for Artists // Spring 2018 Snehta Residency in Athens

Article in Berlin // Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017

The Spring 2018 Snehta Residency invites six contemporary art practitioners to live and work in Kypseli, Athens for two-month residencies. In the spirit of its name ‘Snehta’ (‘Athens’ written in reverse), the organization invites artists to rediscover Athens through translation and observation of the local, social, and cultural dynamics of the city. The residency aims to create a dialogue with the social, material, aesthetic and architectural infrastructure of the city through the historical, psycho-geographical, contemporary and traditional analysis of its formation. Snehta additionally organizes a series of exhibitions, talks and workshops around critical engagements with Athens’ identity as a social and historic center. Research should relate to and critically stimulate Hellenic, inter-European and global audiences, redefining Athens in a global context. Snehta is open to highly-committed individuals who will demonstrate a genuine interest in the city’s current economic, social and cultural condition and its place on a global scale.

Snehta encourages innovative and experimental artists whose work strongly regards the involvement of the community in the artwork or organization to apply. Each recipient will work with an Athens-based curator throughout their stay, in support of their research and the realization of an exhibition. Artists live together in the three bedroom flat in Aghias Zonis, which includes a small fully functional darkroom. The nearby studio space at Ioannou Drosopoulou 47 is composed of three studio spaces (shared), one wood workshop and an exhibition space. There is an artist fee of approximately £690.
