Earlier this year Berlin-based artists were invited to apply for the Berlin Art Prize 2018. The prize will award three artists with a residency in Marrakech, Morocco, prize money and a trophy designed by Zuzanna Czebatul. The Berlin Art Prize is unique in that it is the only award in Berlin that remains disconnected from all institutions within the city. Launched in 2013, it honors contemporary art from Berlin without consideration of previous exhibition history or education, and is based solely on the merit of the work. Artists are evaluated anonymously by a jury of five artists, critics and curators.
This years nominees include artists Ana Alenso, Arthur Debert, Monika Grabuschnigg, Nina Kurtela, Alanna Lynch, Markues, Doireann O’Malley, Lorenzo Sandoval and Nina Wiesnagrotzki. An exhibition featuring all nominees will open on August 31 at The Shelf in Kreuzberg and stay on view September 28, when, at midnight, the three winners will be announced by the jury, which includes Pauline Doutreluingne (curator), Övül Ö. Durmușoǧlu (critic and curator), Philipp Ekardt (critic), Michaela Melián (artist) and Johannes Paul Raether (artist), among others.
