Apply for Rhizome’s Microgrants

Since 2014, Rhizome has held annual open calls for microgrants and the time has come yet again. This year, microgrants will be awarded in the categories of net art, virtual reality and poetry for the creation of new artworks, online exhibitions and other web-based projects. Each grant ranges from 500 to 1,500 USD and recipients will be selected by professional juries.

For the poetry microgrants, projects should explore poetry and poetics in the context of the internet-be it poetry itself or a poetic interpretation of computation and code. Rhizome Assistant Curator Aria Dean, writer Brendan C. Byrne and artist/writer manuel arturo abreu will select the winner(s).

Artists working with virtual reality will be given funds to finish an ongoing work, to then be released via the app “First Look: Artists’ VR,” which is co-presented Rhizome and the New Museum. These submissions will be judged by Rhizome Executive Director Zachary Kaplan and New Museum Associate Curator Helga Christoffersen.

In the net art category, the jury of Rhizome Preservation Director Dragan Espenschied, curator/writer Celine Katzman and Rhizome Community Manager Lauren Studebaker are looking for projects that engage the internet as a medium and produce online exhibitions or browser-based artworks.

Previous projects funded by the Rhizome Microgrant Program have incuded a website critiquing an internet misogynist, an excavation of the emails left behind by one of the largest corporate frauds in history, an exploitation videogame inspired by the Kardashians, and an analysis of language usage in Egyptian social media during the 2011 revolution.
