Self-Care Artist Residency on the Swedish Coast

Dec. 28, 2018

The Swedish Municipality of Varberg is known for its long history of self-care health resorts, dating back to the 1800s, with the first public health springs partly birthing the emergence of spa culture, and some of the first promoters of outdoor activities, balanced diets, hydration and mindfulness. Art Inside Out is now calling for artists for a residency in Varberg, to create works that will not only address the significance and history of the health resort, but also connect it to the many cultural sites and stories tied to its past. All artists including performance, sound, text and visual artists are invited to explore the evolving perceptions of self-care and well-being, and how the influence of health resorts like this one have affected modern perceptions of personal and communal wellness.

Throughout the residency, the artists will be supported by an experienced facilitator during their artistic process, and various public meetings will be held to help develop and solidify the artists’ works. The residency offers an eight-week time period for the three selected artists who will be living on-site as they complete their projects.

The first section of the residency from April 29th to May 12th will be dedicated to research, followed by production time until June 9th. There will be a presentation period spanning from August 26th until September 8th, during which the art will be exhibited in Varberg and throughout the Halland County in Sweden. Each artist receives a grant of 88,000 SEK (8,545.52 EUR) with a 20,000 SEK (1,942 EUR) production budget as well as accommodations, workspace and travel costs covered.
