The art world has become extremely mobile and artists are constantly on the move. It is precisely artists who are themselves often (tourist) travellers, who reflect and develop various aesthetic strategies from the tension between imagination, reality and staged pose. Artists’ residencies and travel fellowships have had a decisive influence on this trend, which Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral will continue through their three different fellowships for international artists and curators alike. With exhibition spaces and studios around globe, and exhibitions and biennials taking place worldwide, creating art is currently closely associated with the various topoi of travel. Accordingly, the Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral is shedding light on mobility and travel as artistic praxis and on artistic positions which deal thematically with these topics through this year’s fellowship theme, ‘KUR – Art of Travel’.
What is crucial for artistic interaction with this year’s theme is the visual dimension of travel. Travel is always associated with the production and reproduction of images, including imaginary utopian/dystopian images and tourist pictures of the world as much as artistic positions. The focus will be on the way various forms, motivations and associated social practices of travel are confronted, with ‘KUR – Art of Travel’ acting as an allusion to the history of the town of Bad Ems and its tradition as a fashionable and sophisticated spa (Kur) resort in the 19th century.
Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral is offering fellowships in three different categories: they will award six International Residential fellowships to international visual artists; one to an international curator; and seven to artists with specific relations to the Rhineland Palatinate to complete projects and foster exchanges abroad. The residential fellowships run for three to nine months, starting in June 2020, and are endowed with 1,400 EUR a month and include free accommodation in the Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral. The International Curator fellowship, which runs for nine months, offers the same provisions. Since 2015, artists with relations to the Rhineland Palatinate can apply three times for each state fellowship, meaning three times for a project fellowship, three times for a fellowship in Paris, etc., but only once every two years. The project, foreign and exchange fellowships are endowed with 1,200 EUR per month (with the exception of South Korea).
