‘Las Casas Invisibles’ (Invisible Houses) is the first performance by KDV Dance Ensemble, premiering February 1st at Funkhaus Berlin. KDV Dance Ensemble is a multidisciplinary dance company founded by choreographer and director Kianí del Valle. With live music by Raven, Floating Points and Lotic, whose compositions are marked by unique electronic and abstract atmospheres, the show will be divided into three interconnected musical and visual landscapes. Stylist Olive Duran has also partnered with the company to create looks for the performers. Combining choreography, music, costume and lighting, the performance will explore migration, displacement, the colonized-decolonized body and androgyny.
The title of the Ensembles’ first show reflects the difficulty in defining home. The project has long been in the making and reflects the concerns of Puerto Rican director Kianí del Valle, whose work over the past 15 years has explored themes of migration, flux and identity.
Del Valle has collaborated with numerous established artistic institutions from the Getty Museum in LA to Konzerthaus Berlin. Most recently, she choreographed work for installation artist Claudia Comte, who is represented by König Galerie, at Copenhagen Contemporary.
KDV Dance Ensemble focuses on “movement language” and instead of dancers the company prefers the term “movers” – tying their language of migratory phenomena to their practice. There is a focus on character development for each of the movers and a separation from traditional classical dance forms. ‘Las Casas Invisibles’ will reflect the ubiquitous problem inherent to diaspora—displacement and questions of identity – an issue which has come to define this era.
