The Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art in cooperation with Kuldīga Artists’ Residency and the Art Academy of Latvia once again offers their annual summer school on pressing contemporary cultural issues and their manifestation on critical thinking, as well as artistic pursuits and practices. The topic of this year’s summer curriculum focuses on themes of feminism and gender studies through their historical and contemporary enactment in Baltic and Eastern Europe societies.
The school seeks career artists, art historians, humanities scholars, curators and cultural studies researchers from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania specifically encouraging MA and PhD students to apply. A wonderful educational opportunity, the program itself is free of charge. The sole cost of €80 is designed to cover partial accommodation and catering costs during the school session. Outcomes of the application process will be made known by June 22nd.

The main focus of this Summer School, titled ‘Negotiating Gender in the Baltics and Eastern Europe,’ is to explore the still withstanding heteronormative and patriarchal gender-based patterns. The course aims to pose and answer essential gender-related questions including: what are the predominant social and historical culprits of the subjugation of women in this region? How may art from the Baltics/Eastern Europe contribute to the discourse of gender issues? The course also aims to reflect on possible change for an alternative future by a thorough examination of historical context.
This Summer School—taking place from July 31st until August 5th in the Latvian town of Kuldīga—will hold a variety of informative workshops and lectures from artists, researchers, experts and political activists on visual art, feminist cultural studies and cultural anthropology. Some prominent names include the researchers Redi Koobak (University of Bergen) and Bart Pushaw (University of Copenhagen); critic and curator Jana Kukaine (Art Academy of Latvia); curator, artist and poet Laima Kreivytė (Vilnius); and artists Jaana Kokko (Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki) and Vala Tomasz Foltyn | Valentine Tanz (Krakow/Copenhagen). The principal curators of the Summer School program are Ieva Astahovska and Andra Silapētere.
