This year’s Venice Biennale of Art is an invitation to give more space for fantasy and the magic of transformation. With the exhibition title ‘The Milk of Dreams,’ curator Cecilia Alemani refers to the eponymous book from the 1950s by Mexican surrealist Leonora Carrington. In her introduction to the biennial catalogue, Alemani cites Carrington’s stories and drawings of a magical world “in which everyone can change, transform, become something or someone else” as the inspiration behind her curatorial approach. The theme of transformation and change, otherworldly creatures, chimera between nature and technology and references to Greek mythology are not only omnipresent in Alemani’s biennial contribution but can be encountered in many other exhibitions, such as in the national pavilions and collateral events that are part of the Venice Biennale.
