The Museum am Rothenbaum / Kulturen und Künste der Welt (MARKK) invites international emerging artists to apply for their residency program, MARKK in Motion, funded by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation). MARKK is a prominent ethnographic museum based in Hamburg. They are entering a period of transition, which includes a new conceptualization of the permanent display, a reconfiguration of the program and a critical engagement with its own institutional history and the history of its collection.
The residency is open to artists working in all forms of media (visual, graphic, literary, performance, etc.) and who have theoretical expertise and practical experience in dealing with complex and sensitive issues such as colonialism, migration, climate change and/or the reinterpretation of ethnographic collections. Specifically, the museum is looking for an artist to engage with the Oceania collection, starting with the Marshall Islands and related areas.
Successful applicants will stay in Hamburg for the duration of the program (January to March 2023) and will receive a stipend of € 8,500. The museum will provide a small working space, access to the object and photo collections, the archive and the museum’s library network. Production costs for the artwork will be covered up to a certain amount. Activities during the residency include developing and creating a work of art that will be exhibited at MARKK, performing co-curatorial tasks, participating in one internal workshop and taking part in at least one publication format.
The application should contain a concept/work plan in relation to thematic focus (max. 2 A4 pages), a 300 character summary of the concept/work plan, CV or Portfolio (max. 7 A4 pages). The size for attachments should be no larger than 5MB. Applications can be submitted in English or German.
