M+ Museum in Hong Kong is currently accepting proposals for the Sigg fellowship for Chinese Art Research 2022/23. The fellowship supports new research on Chinese art in dialogue with the M+ Collections in order to strengthen the conversation on contemporary art in the region. For this year’s edition of the fellowship, they hope to generate a holistic view of the theoretical and linguistic origins of conceptual art in China.
Eligible applicants should either hold a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline or an undergraduate degree with a minimum of three years of relevant professional work or academic experience. The applicant must also be proficient in spoken and written Chinese or English and be able to obtain a Hong Kong visa.
The awarded fellow will be expected to work with M+ for a period of three to six months to develop their proposed research project in response to the theme. The fellow will have access to the M+ Collections onsite and online, including library and archival materials, and take part in discussions with curators and other staff members. The fellowship concludes with a public lecture in Hong Kong and an essay in Chinese (at least 7,500 characters) or in English (at least 5,000 words) to be published in the M+ magazine. Also, a grant of HKD 200,000 to cover all expenses, including travel, living, insurance, and research-related costs.
In order to apply, please provide (in English or Chinese), a research proposal of no more than 1,000 words, a full CV, and two letters of recommendation. Successful applications will be assessed by originality, knowledge of Chinese art, the potential for expanding the scope of the museum’s collection and proven ability to undertake advanced research. Submissions are reviewed by a committee comprising of representatives from M+ and professionals from outside the institution. Results will be announced in early 2023.
