Stubborn Wolf: Skeletons and Landscapes

Not long after Hiyme’s arrival in February this year, he broke his foot and was left wheelchair bound and lonely, struggling in a city made of staircases. Luckily for this painter, his character is not dissimilar to his paintings, colourful and chaotic, fun and magnetic – somehow eight months later, with an ever slowly-healing injury, he has survived the worst of it and is showing his work for the first time in Europe.

Working in various mediums, including wood, canvas, poetry, paper and found objects, Hiyme constructs landscapes and secret languages. His paintings reference memories – of mountains and skies, bikers and wolves. Dreamt to-be memories and wished forgotten ones too – memories reconstructed using repetitive symbols and bold colours.

Halloween proves the perfect occasion for an exhibition of Hiyme’s works – simultaneously playful and sinister, celebration and mourning. Halloween is also an American tradition, slightly out of place in Berlin – Hiyme too, sometimes feels slightly out of place in this city.
