June 14, 2024

Borderland Residencies is a support structure of annual art residencies in the Dutch-Belgian-German border area of the Lower Rhine region, Aachen, East Belgium and the Province of Limburg. The program co-finances scholarships, short-term artistic interventions and co-productions, while providing a strong transnational network and support through regular meetings, professional contacts and presentation opportunities.

Ludwig Forum Aachen invites applications for the 2024 Borderland Residencies, which will take place on the museum grounds from September 1 to November 30, 2024. Open to international visual artists, artist duos and small groups, the residency focuses on engaging with the Rhineland and Belgian-Dutch art scenes. It includes free accommodation, a € 1,500 monthly stipend, up to €1,000 for travel expenses, studio visits, events and field trips across the EuRegion, a final project presentation at the museum, participation in regular events at Ludwig Forum Aachen and within the institutional network of the Borderlands Residencies, as well as assistance with research projects and local art scene connections.

Ludwig Forum Aachen is a contemporary art museum that houses significant parts of the Peter and Irene Ludwig Collection. It features 6000 square meters of exhibition space spread across four floors, along with a theatre, sculpture garden and an art mediation workshop equipped with printing and pottery facilities. The museum’s transdisciplinary program combines solo and group exhibitions with research projects, conferences, screenings, music and dance festivals, and educational activities to continuously expand and re-contextualize its collections.

Artists based in Germany or currently enrolled at a university are not eligible to apply, except for those enrolled in PhD programs. The residency is awarded primarily based on the quality of the application and submitted work. The selected artist must be present on-site during the residency. Currently, the program is not wheelchair accessible.

Applicants are asked to send a digital application in German or English to timon.linke@mail.aachen.de, including a short proposal for a context-specific project (up to two pages), a CV (up to two pages) and a portfolio (PDF file, max. 10 MB, max. 10 A4 pages, with links to moving image and/or sound works if applicable). The application deadline is June 26, 2024, 11:59pm CET. A jury will review all applications, and the selected resident will be notified during the first week of July 2024.
