This weekend, HomeBase LAB, the Berlin installment of the international artist residency and research program by the same name, launches its three-day festival, presented by HomeBase Project and ArtStars*, simply entitled HB Festival. It is located in Pankow but it’s not that far (as the flyer stresses), especially considering the stacked line-up. There are over twenty open studios to peruse, each one housing art made of everything from glass to smoke, comics and performance pieces, graffiti art and floor installations, DJ dance parties, live beer brewing sessions, and even the rumors of a Bach teatime concerto. And all this is free and open to the public.

As the final exhibition of a 3-month international residency program, overflowing with features from local Berlin artists, this bi-annual festival will take place through four separate areas of the former Engelhardt brewery where the HomeBase Project’s home brew, Ignatz Bier, is now annually produced. Among the festivities, the HB Festival will facilitate live discussions about the social side of art and its role in creating urban change, the interconnectivity of society and experimentation in urban living, and recent research on the complicated meaning of “home”.
