The DMY International Design Festival is the largest German festival for contemporary product design, last year it attracted over 35,000 visitors. Since 2003 DMY Berlin has built an extensive global network through its presence at important international design fairs, and was involved in the organization of trade fairs in Europe, Asia and North and South America. DMY Berlin is now an internationally renowned platform for contemporary product design and has become one of the most important design institutions in Germany.
The central exhibition takes place from June 5 to 9 at the former Tempelhof Airport. In the hangars over 500 designers from 30 nations present new products, prototypes and material innovations. 14 nationally and internationally renowned universities will provide insight into the current state of research. Group exhibitions will show the work of design institutions from all over the world. This year the focus is on Poland. More than 40 design studios, companies and schools will provide an overview of the latest design coming out the country, whose scene has rapidly developed over the last few years.
The festival includes the assignment of two different awards: the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany and the DMY Awards. The first one has been awarded by the Ministry of Economics and Technology since 1969 and is considered to be the highest national award in the field. The latter will be awarded to the best work among all festival submissions in the categories of Exhibitors, New Talent and Education, underlining a particular attention to the future and innovation by the organizers.
A “Speakers’ Corner” is organized within the central exhibition, where international designers, representatives of universities, studios and companies will hold open talks. During the course of the event, on June 6, the Nightshift – Long Night of the Design Studios takes place, where more than 40 designers and design studios will be opening their doors. DMY is a unique chance for visitors to get in touch with design and its environment through exhibitions, visits and talks, and see an all-comprehensive view on this deeply fascinating world.
