Tuesday night marked the opening of the second annual Berlin Art Week, with a packed street party on Auguststrasse in Mitte. The next six days are devoted to Berlin’s ever-growing art scene, with an ambitious program of exhibitions, talks, performances and presentations at galleries and project spaces across the city.
The event, which runs alongside Art Berlin Contemporary (ABC) and Preview Berlin art fairs, has united four of the city’s major institutions – the Berlin Staatliche Museen, Berlinische Galerie, Deutsche Bank Kunsthalle and KW Institute for contemporary art – for the joint exhibition ‘Painting Forever!’. This all-encompassing exhibition, set in four venues, attempts to show the history of contemporary painting in Berlin. At KW, the curation even makes reference to this historical approach, with a Salon style hanging of paintings cheek-to-cheek on the gallery wall.
Auguststrasse was teeming with people on Tuesday night as several of the official venues, and many ‘unofficial’ small, privately owned galleries, opened their doors to the public. There was a concert stage set up on the street, providing live music throughout the night as well as several impromptu musical acts along the sidewalks. Every gallery on this stretch of Auguststrasse was filled with visitors and the KW had line-ups onto the street. The buzz around Art Week has clearly generated popular interest and the opening night alone proved that this year’s event is likely to be a resounding success.
