Exhibition // Sinta Werner’s The Operation of Displacement at Alexander Levy

Berlin-based artist Sinta Werner recently opened her solo show ‘The Operation of Displacement’ at Galerie Alexander Levy. The exhibition features new collage and installation works by Werner, who is known for her architectonic and illusory style.

Werner’s fascination with geometric structures and architectural facades is noticeable throughout her oeuvre, and her new pieces at Galerie Levy are no exception. What appear at first sight as regular, well-composed black & white photographs of Kreuzberg-style housing blocks, are in fact infinitely meticulous and imaginative spatial reconstructions, done by cutting, folding and weaving along chosen architectural lines. As somewhat of an ‘architect-after-the-fact,’ Werner manages to combine giants of monumental architecture into playful and effortless, invented hybrid buildings.

Besides the collage series – from which the exhibition takes its name – the show also includes two larger 3D façade installations. The far window of the gallery is covered with a photograph of another window, pasted slightly off-centre, revealing its topographical differences from the real window underneath. The repetitive doubling – a window upon a window – is characteristic of Werner’s work and she succeeds at giving us the uncanny feeling of witnessing a world just like our own but distorted by small, almost imperceptible adjustments.
