Now in it’s 10th year Berliner Liste opened this week with 131 exhibitors ranging from emerging self represented artists to lesser-known international and Berlin based galleries. Additionally, for the first time Berliner Liste has created a section dedicated to photography. The oldest art fair in Berlin, Berliner Liste is exhibiting work on three floors at the industrial site, Kraftwerk, until Sunday, 22nd September.
The ground floor is dedicated to galleries and project spaces. There you can find the work of Georgian artist Irakli Bugiani, represented by Dhadamus Contemporary. His most recent abstract paintings of soviet architecture consist of muted colours, simplistic depictions, and visible heavy lined brush stokes. Bugiani’s soft portrayals of Eastern European structures capture a nostalgic feeling whilst conveying the necessity of functionality within brutal soviet architecture.
One of the more interesting spaces at Berliner Liste this year is the not for profit organisation, SEA Foundation. The foundation, based in Tilburg, is dedicated to supporting emerging international and Dutch artists. Their main focuses are to create an artistic network of visual artists, a platform for collaboration and on going artistic support. The work represented by SEA Foundation ranged from conceptual design, abstract paintings, and sculptural interventions.
Jessica Dettinger and Michal Plata
Jessica Dettinger and Michal Plata are an artist collaboration based in Munich who represented themselves at the art fair. Both artists are showing their most recent figurative work, which was made separately. Dettinger’s minimalistic collages are structured around concepts of self-image in modern society. She’s interested in the idea of over sharing and ways individuals present themselves. Plata’s abstract paintings are from his series Bodies, Faces, and Places. Each piece represents a process of working through removing the distinctiveness of the human form, with fleshy colours remaining.
David Lynch’s black and white paintings, represented by Galerie Obrist, were a main attraction at Berliner Liste this year alongside an exhibition on the main floor with work selected by curator, Dr Peter Funken.
