C/O Berlin – the city’s foremost exhibition space for photography which recently moved to the Amerika House in Charlottenburg – is hosting the 9th year of TALENTS. The open call for TALENTS, themed “Memories,” targets young international photographers and runs until 11 April 2014. The theme derives from theories of photography itself, insofar as a camera can capture or freeze a moment in time and photographs can operate as a mechanism for retaining a memory (or a collective memory). While individual memories are contained within the aesthetic and content of the photograph, they are also actively produced and distorted in the technical elements that create the composition of the image. If photographic images are said to represent the visual component of our memory, how reliable is this medium?
“Memories” also demands contending with the way in which the vast overflow of digitized photos has impacted our collective memory. C/O Berlin is looking for submissions in all forms of “conceptual, playful, or scientific” photography, film, or art criticism that address the topic of “Memories”.
