A entrepreneur with a porn business is a surprising choice for the protagonist of a film, particularly one from the 1960’s. But Japanese director Shohei Imamura‘s surreal story, The Pornographers (1966) features no conventions, as the twice Palme d’Or winning director has included other characters in the film such as a woman who believes her husband to be reincarnated as a fish.
The director is known for his examination and focus on the underbelly of society. The film, based on a novel, takes a satirical anthropological look at the gangster and pornography business in Osaka following the second World War. However, the designs of society and its constricts relate to more than just the voyeuristic business of porn.
The film’s ironies and Japanese New Wave stylized techniques have made the film one of Imamura’s most popular worldwide works and a cult classic.
