Köpfe at ACUD Macht Neu is an exhibition that offers glimpses into artist Eva Maria Salvador’s ongoing, ever-changing oeuvre, in stark photographs and gestural paintings over prints. In this show Salvador confidently presents works that are neither whole nor finished, with artworks that are defined by constant, animate growth.

Salvador describes her works and process with a thoughtful and expressive energy. The Köpfe series began with a very artificial female head shape: one that resembles a “perfect” female profile in classical art and also one that appears in shops and magazines, with both the institution of fashion and of high art constructing a problematically static and rigid image for women. Salvador’s works open the instabilities and contradictions of this image with sculptures made out of beauty products and a whole assortment of other materials that appear garishly artificial and at the same time organic. The various stages of these sculptures are presented in bare photographs that have the doubtful objectivity of scientific specimens. The photographs generate abstract paintings, where Salvador responds to the shapes and colours with instinctual forms.

Salvador confidently asserts a place for feminist creativity in a predominantly masculine art practice of monumental works and self-sufficient constructions. She avoids defining female art as the inverse of the male, since that still depends on the masculine. Instead, her work traces out a space of incompletion, following the construction of images from bodies and constantly morphing between states: growing, disappearing, and giving birth to new forms.
