Lujiazui Harbour City in Shanghai is promoting an open call for large-scale public artworks. The new development seeks to present an upscale area with site-specific pieces. Public Art director Fram Kitagawa believes the works will connect individuals in the community and give the space “a human touch.” In the lens of globalization, organizers devised the theme ‘Space-Time Vessel Traveling Through the Universe.’ The area is a former shipyard refashioned as a shopping and residential area. The Lujiazui Harbour City consists of skyscraper apartment complexes, constructed park spaces, and commercial centers. According to Kitagawa, the site has been a point of migration for the past 60,000 years. He hopes the art will consider this history while looking into the space’s bright and bustling future of commerce and exchange.
The open call asks for work in varying media. The 28 available sites offer a diverse array of possibilities; there are outdoor spaces for sculpture, indoor spaces for installations, and even an LED wall for projection of digital art. With a proposed total of 40 installations, the district intends to be brimming with art and culture.
Interested artists can find the application details here. Those awarded the opportunity will receive $12,000 for the artist fee, travel and accommodation. The production and organizational costs will also be covered based on the budget of the work. Jean de Loisy, President of Palais de Tokyo; Andrea Schlieker, Director of Commissions and Public Projects at White Cube; and independent curator Fang Zhenning will judge the submissions. The deadline for submissions is September 30th, 2016.
