New York-based artist Robert Lazzarini recently opened his third solo exhibition, ‘Deeper Than Wide’, at DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM.
Lazzarini’s paintings are an appropriation of media images of the actress Sharon Tate, who at the height of her beauty and fame was brutally murdered by the Manson Family. Tate is an archetype of beauty as much as she is one of tragic untimely death. The artist has applied optical patterning and lines to these mass-consumed images of the actress. Lazzarini creates a situation for the viewer where the act of looking is compromised, the images are elusive and distorted. The effect becomes a comment on the nature of memory and perception.
‘Deeper Than Wide’ is a forensic term used for penetrative wounds to the flesh and therefore a reference to the manner in which Tate was murdered. Lazzarini has created an exhibition that provides an opportunity to consider the ways in which we receive information. The artist makes evident the ways in which we are vulnerable to manipulation and the effects that this can have on our perception of the world.
