Heit, a new “hidden” exhibition space, opened last Sunday in the basement of a residential building on Eichendorffstraße. Their first show Auch wir waren in Arkadien (We were also in Arcadia) is a photography show exhibiting the work of four young Berlin artists.

Polish artist Weronika Trojanska is taking part in the group show Breaking Point, curated by Überflug Berlin at Engels Café in Neukölln…Through these works Trojanska explores the origins of crisis and of wars- at how fantasy, utopia, and certain ideals can lead to horror, or, to borrow her own words “create a monster”.

This week I was lucky enough to discover the conceptual work of Romanian artist Ioana Nemes following a visit to the Jiri Svestka Gallery in Schöneberg for their summer show ‘On the Threshold’. Three large wall pieces, each a different colour but each resembling a giant tombstone, dominate the brightest of spaces at the gallery, demanding a somewhat ominous sense of intrigue…

One thing I like about the German language is that it demonstrates the possibility of being both logical and fun. This week much-publicized festival initiated by the German Federal Cultural Foundation in cooperation with the House of World Cultures is titled, Über Lebenskunst, which can be read and interpreted as either “About the Art of Living” or “The Art of Survival”.

From the pavement of the Ku’damm you can view through the French Institute’s façade-spanning windows the paintings of Miss.Tic, hanging unusually on the gallery’s interior walls. One of the rare women on the street art scene, it is somehow bizarre to view her work inside a gallery space.

Since December 2010, added to the independent art scene of Berlin is the satellite space of Or Gallery – one of the oldest & most successful artist-run centres from Vancouver, Canada. This past Friday, I attended the opening for New York based artist Jonathan Schipper at DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM located in the Mitte section of Berlin.
Approaching the gallery, viewers spilled from the interior onto the sidewalk, beer in hand.
